Oklahoma River Race Course Lighting

The City of Oklahoma City has selected Garver to provide design services to illuminate and aesthetically enhance a 1,000-meter race course along the Oklahoma River.

The project includes event, practice, and architectural lighting to support nighttime activities, U.S. Olympic time trials, and other special racing events. Located in the Boathouse District, the site is becoming a popular area for rowing, canoeing, and kayaking.

Design includes lighting for training and enhanced lighting for night-time events. Future phases of work are expected to include versatile LED light fixtures that provide different colored themes depending upon the season and event, which will provide a pleasing technological experience for spectators, participants, and trainers as well as public address systems and infrastructure for televised events.

Me and My Job Shadow

Middle school student Taylor, 13, wants to be a structural engineer when he grows up. “I like building things, and I like math,” he says.

Last Friday, Taylor shadowed some of Garver’s structural engineers in our transportation and federal groups. Taylor spent the day touring the North Little Rock, Arkansas office and visiting Garver project sites such as the Big Dam Bridge and the Two Rivers Bridge, which is under construction. Taylor had the opportunity to see the Two Rivers Bridge up close, and he was proud to be the “youngest person and first 13-year-old to walk on the bridge.” Taylor was mentored by Garver engineers A.J. Khairi, David Gambill, Fred Harper, Jason Johnston, and Reed Self.

Grand Conceptor Award

For the second consecutive year, ACEC Oklahoma awarded its Grand Conceptor Award to Garver. At its annual Engineering Excellence Awards Program, ACEC Oklahoma presented Garver with its highest award for helping the City of Norman reclaim water and revenue. Garver assisted the city implement an advanced arsenic-treatment technology that is reclaiming abandoned city wells due to high arsenic levels.

Garver provided management, engineering, regulatory assistance, and system start-up to pilot a wellhead arsenic removal system. Throughout the yearlong demonstration, the adsorption system successfully removed arsenic and provided cost-effective product drinking water with arsenic levels safely below maximum contaminant levels. As an added bonus, nearly 75 million gallons of drinking water were produced during the demonstration and generated revenue for the city.

This project will now compete in the National ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards competition in April. Last year, Garver's parallel taxiway realignment project at Ada Municipal Airport won the ACEC Oklahoma Grand Conceptor Award.

Honor Award
Garver also won an ACEC Oklahoma Engineering Excellence Honor Award for wastewater treatment plant improvements in the City of Mustang. The city was under a Department of Environmental Quality consent order to meet water quality targets and needed to upgrade its plant within a fiscally strapped budget. Garver designed the upgrade in two phases, separated the phases by 10 years, and utilized state and federal government funding sources to make the project a success.

Air Force Base Opens University Center

This week, the Little Rock Air Force Base and the City of Jacksonville, Arkansas celebrated the opening of a joint-use university center. The 46,000-square-foot facility provides classrooms and offices for six resident universities offering college-level courses to military personnel, their families, and local civilians.

“This is the opportunity for people who put their lives on the line for us—men and women who wear a uniform and go in harm’s way—to have a state-of-the-art facility and quality instruction,” said Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe. “It’s particularly important and gratifying for me to celebrate the opening of a facility that addresses some of [Arkansas'] needs in higher education.”

Garver provided project management and civil and structural design for the new education center. This project will be featured in Garver's March issue of IQ.
