UA Engineering Students Visit Garver Offices

Engineering students tour the I-244 Multimodal Bridge in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Incoming freshmen who plan to major in engineering at the University of Arkansas recently visited Garver’s Tulsa, Oklahoma office to get an idea of what the profession will be like. Garver’s Bridge Team Leader Jason Langhammer discussed the I-244 Westbound Multimodal Bridge over the Arkansas River with the students before taking them to visit the project site.

The students are part of the university’s Engineering Career Awareness Program, which is an engineering diversity recruitment-to-graduation initiative to increase the number of underrepresented students entering and graduating from engineering disciplines. Project Engineer Pedro Maltos, who is a 2011 graduate of the program, helped organize the visit.

Garver has a strong relationship with the University of Arkansas and that’s exhibited through multiple ways. Earlier this year, Brian Henderson, director of employer relations at the College of Engineering, brought a group of upperclassmen to Garver’s corporate headquarters in North Little Rock, Arkansas.

“I want students to see first-hand what types of opportunities are out there,” said Henderson. “Bringing students to Garver helps me do that.”

The students spent time with engineers who each work on different teams within Garver full range of service teams—Transportation, Aviation, Water, Federal, Facilities Design, Energy, Development, Construction, Survey and AssetMax.

“It seems like just a year ago I was sitting where they are,” said Garver Project Manager Adam Hall, who has been with the company for seven years. “The foundation set and skills I learned when I was an engineering student is being applied on a day-to-day basis here at Garver.”

New Pedestrian Bridge Spans Shillcott Bayou

Construction crews in North Little Rock, Arkansas recently replaced the pedestrian bridge over Shillcott Bayou in Burns Park. The 145-foot steel truss span bridge with a reinforced concrete deck will replace an old wooden bridge on the Little Rock metro area’s Arkansas River Trail, which is a favorite amongst the city’s bicyclists, joggers, and walkers.

Garver provided surveying, conceptual planning, environmental handling and documentation, geotechnical engineering, final bridge design, bidding, and construction observation services to replace the bridge, which is expected to be open in July 2014.

“This project provides a new bridge that gives pedestrians and cyclists the opportunity to enjoy Burns Park and the River Trail without the limitation of the existing timber bridge structure,” said Project Manager Blake Martin. “Also, the new bridge will have less maintenance and repair cost than the existing one.”

Garver Receives International Award of Merit for Oklahoma River Lighting Project

The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) recently recognized Garver with an International Award of Merit for Lighting Control Innovation for the Oklahoma River Lighting Control System Design Project in Oklahoma City.

Garver worked with the city and coordinated with the Oklahoma Boathouse Foundation to design and install lighting for the equivalent surface area of nearly nine football fields along the Oklahoma River, resulting in the first permanently lit river race course in the world.

“Winning this award puts us in elite international company,” said Project Manager Bart Gilbreath, PE, LEED AP. “Everyone worked really hard to come up with this unique and detailed design, and it’s nice to be recognized at an international level for a job well done.”

The award is Garver’s third such IES award in the past 10 years. Previous awards were given for the Pulaski County Pedestrian Bridge Pier Lighting in Little Rock, Arkansas and Westbound I-244 Arkansas River Bridge Highway Lighting in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2007 and 2013, respectively.
